At last a new Zelda game! Technically the 3DS version of Ocarina of Time is a newly released game too, but it's still a remake with very little differences compared to the original (aside from a huge graphic overhaul). My poor 3DS Link is still stuck in Forest Temple, after getting owned by a miniboss (and the platform it stands on...resulting in falling into the room below, having to walk back to the miniboss room, several times!).
Got myself the Limited Edition, which means a golden Wii-mote with a Hylian Crest decorated on it (and apparently with build-in motion plus) and a CD with The Legend of Zelda 25th Anniversary Symphony, which so far sounds very nice. On a sidenote...want to trade my 3DS for the special 25th Zelda Anniversary 3DS, black with golden decoration. It's so awesome. Piccy of the Limited Edition, shamelessly stolen from a forum: Clicky!
The first thing I noticed was that some scenes in the game were a tad pixelish. Nintendo ain't exactly known for their top quality graphics, the Wii simply doesn't have the specs for that. Ofcourse it probably also doesn't help that I was playing it on a huge 3D tv. Maybe I am just spoiled? Anyways, the cutscenes itself are lovely looking. It's just the birds eye view that seem a tad lower quality. Nintendo did a great job on the graphics, the designs, the areas, the characters itself. The Zelda/Link interaction is adorable. Because Zelda is no longer a princess in this game, it allows Nintendo to give her more personality. No longer bound by any formalities royals tend to have.
The opening scene was brilliant, awesome humor. I actually laughed out loud there. When I saw previews I wasn't really convinced it would be a good storyline, but now it seems very promising. I am curious where in the Zelda timeline this particular game will fit. Been avoiding any information about this on purpose, so I can figure it out myself.
Controls are awkward for me, having played Twilight Princess on the Gamecube, thus zero experience with Wii controls. My shoulder actually hurts a bit after 2 hours of gameplay. The amount of times I missed a platform, argh. Flying will also take some time to get used to. Overall, slashing a sword and defending with a shield real-time with the Wii-mote and nunchuk is pretty nifty. You cannot play the game without motion plus controller it seems btw, I am very glad I purchased the Limited Edition.
Can't wait to play more. Shoulder needs some rest first tho =P
